Bread of Freedom, vol. 1
Bread of Freedom, vol.
The author used excerpts from the memoirs in the books Heaven Without Birds by Danuta Brzosko-Mędryk, Field of Death by Andrzej Stanisławski, and Majdanek. The Concentration Camp in the Accounts of Prisoners and Witnesses edited by Marta Grudzińska, as well as the story of Jolanta Nowakowska-Korzeniewska, who was imprisoned in Majdanek as a child. The comic is accompanied by a short historical afterword, a glossary of terms, and biographies of prisoners whose stories became the basis for the narrative.
The phrase “bread of freedom” was used by prisoners in concentration camps during World War II. It referred to bread baked outside the camp and was a symbol of longing for home. Bread of freedom was, and still is, a value reflecting different human attitudes, presented in the three parts of the comic: About Hunger, About Death, and About Freedom. What united the prisoners and gave them the strength to fight for life every day was a deep sense of hope for freedom.
